Playing Chess with Pigeons

As Ed Brayton reported the other day on Dispatches from the Culture Wars, the “conservatives” over at Worldnutdaily have been “throwing a fit” because one of McDonald’s executives (Richard Ellis, vice president of communications) was elected to the board of the National Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce, and because McDonald’s is a corporate partner with the NGLCC. Oh the horror!

But “throwing a fit” is not a strong enough term for what is going on over at Pro-Existence the blog of Rick and Nancy Pearcey (Nancy is one of the top brass in the intelligent design crowd). Here is Rick’s “measured” reaction to McDonald’s actions:

…Twenty-five cents, I think, for a McDonald’s hamburger. What fun! A great welcome home! But not now. Not today, in light of reports that McDonald’s has decided, apparently, to declare war on my family. And to declare war on the civilization of liberty, independence, creativity, and humanity under God that my Dad fought for in World War II.

McDonald’s wants to sell hamburgers to gays, they apparently don’t hate gays, therefore they have declared war on his family, civilization, humanity and all goodness and niceness in the world? Well, look at it this way, when combat breaks out at least McDonald’s tanks will be easy to spot being painted bright red and yellow and all.

Seriously, can these people get any more overwrought about this? McDonald’s agreeing to be a corporate partner with the NGLCC (along with other radical subversive corporations like IBM, Intel, UPS, Pepsico, and American Express) is a declaration of war against this guy’s family, civilization, and humanity? Someone is going to have to explain the physics of that one to me because I don’t see the connection. And I want to see the work. They won’t be able to of course because this nonsense is based in nothing but bigotry and religious zealotry.

McDonald’s could host nightly gay orgies in their restaurants if they wanted to, and it would have absolutely zero effect on me and my family.
